FAQ
Product & Ingredients
What is matcha, and how is it different from regular green tea?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped in water and then discarded, with matcha you consume the whole leaf. This means you get more nutrients, antioxidants, and a naturally rich, smooth flavor.
Where do you source your matcha from?
We source our matcha from Guizhou, China. For more information, please visit our blog post The Open Secret: Why Your “Japanese” Matcha Might Actually Be Chinese (And Why That’s a Good Thing)
Is your matcha ceremonial grade or culinary grade? What’s the difference?
Ceremonial grade and culinary grade is actually a Western marketing concept. The main differentiation between good matcha and others is the taste and colour, which are determined by the quality of production. Our matcha is produced with strict high standards and can be enjoyed traditionally — plain, without added flavors — because it’s naturally smooth, full of umami, and not bitter.
Is your matcha vegan/gluten-free?
Yes! Our matcha is 100% vegan and gluten-free.
Does your matcha contain sugar or additives?
No. It’s pure matcha with nothing else added.
Health & Wellness
What are the health benefits of drinking matcha?
Matcha is rich in antioxidants (especially catechins), which help fight free radicals in the body. It provides a gentle energy boost without the jitters, supports focus and calm thanks to L-theanine, and may aid metabolism, immunity, and overall wellness.
How much caffeine is in matcha compared to coffee?
One serving of matcha (about 1 teaspoon or 3g) contains roughly 60–70mg of caffeine — about two-thirds the amount in a standard cup of coffee. The difference is that matcha’s caffeine is released more gradually, giving you a sustained, calm energy rather than a sharp spike and crash.
Is matcha safe to drink every day?
Yes, most people can enjoy matcha daily. As with anything, moderation is key — 1–2 servings a day is a good guideline.
Can I drink matcha if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Matcha does contain caffeine, so we recommend checking with your doctor before adding it to your routine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Preparation & Use
How do I prepare matcha traditionally?
Sift 1 teaspoon (about 3g) of matcha into a bowl, then add about 70ml of 80°C hot water. Use a bamboo whisk in a zig-zag motion or electric frother to whisk until frothy. Add more water or milk to taste.
Can I make matcha lattes/iced matcha/smoothies with it?
Yes, you certainly can! Check out our recipes for inspiration.
Do I need special tools like a bamboo whisk (chasen)?
Not necessarily. A bamboo whisk or electric frother both work well. The key is to sift the matcha first to prevent lumps and get a smooth drink.
How much matcha should I use per serving?
It depends on taste. A good starting point is 1 teaspoon (about 3g) per serving.
Storage & Shelf Life
How should I store my matcha to keep it fresh?
Although the expiry date is 2 years after production, we recommend enjoying it within the first year. Once opened, keep your matcha sealed tightly and store it in the fridge.
How long does matcha last after opening?
Up to a month if stored properly in a sealed container in the fridge.
Why does matcha sometimes taste bitter?
This can be due to lower quality production, using too much matcha, or preparing it with water that’s too hot. For best results, use about 1 teaspoon and water at around 80°C.
